Many people were in attendance on May 1, 2011 for the Manitoba Hairstylists’ Association (MHA) Hair Fantasy Competition. This year’s theme was “Under the Hair Top” – what hair creatures were you going to see? Fame Nightclub was where the party was at and people were there to see some beautiful work!

The masses were not disappointed. Eight teams of hairstylists and makeup artists were working feverishly to put the final touches on their models backstage. Hair was flying! Makeup was everywhere! Models were tittering under big hair and awesome costumes.

There were clowns, an apocalyptic goddess, water fairies, and other creations that were being pulled and prodded by their teams. The models took this all in great stride. They had to keep in mind that they had two to three minutes to walk and strut their stuff in front of our panel of judges.  I was in awe of the model’s professionalism and grace. Even if someone got bumped in the head by a speaker, they kept it together and made it look easy!

As for the judges, I would not want their job.  How do you critique something that you know someone spent hours, if not days, working on? Our distinguished panel of judges was up for the job, many of them competitors at one time or another.

Beverly and the Fame Nightclub staff are some of the best hospitality staff in the city. Anything and everything we needed were made available for us to use. Thank you so much for letting us take over your club.

We hope you mark off a Sunday in May 2012 in your calendar! I have a sneaking suspicion that another Hair Fantasy competition is in the works.

The winners were:

Gold – Darkness vs. Innocence – Karen Nacario and Ryan Rara

Silver – Fountain of Youth – Cozy Cuts – Stylist – Jolene Senecal

Bronze – Queen Apocalptica – Salon Venator – Stylists – Silvy McGinity, Kelly Kazlauskas, and Alana Hrabchak

Congratulations to all of the competitors. Thank you to everyone who helped out and thank you for all of the donations. We hope to see you next year!
