On Sunday July 31st over 90 staff and students from all seven M.C. College Group schools across Western Canada attended the sixth annual M.C. Viva Las Vegas conference.  Every student who enrolled in the Hairstyling program in June received this free trip to Las Vegas to participate in the conference and attend the North American Hairstyling Awards.

The conference, just for M.C. students and staff, featured renowned European stylist and Pivot Point International artistic director Yolly Ten Koppel along with International platform artist Laddie James.  Ten Koppel and James presented models showing the latest in colouring, cutting, and styling techniques.

As if that wasn’t exciting enough, M.C. students and staff were treated to special guest presentations by industry icons Wendy Belanger and Tony Ricci.  Belanger is a former M.C. graduate and instructor who is now the artistic director for Pureology. Ricci, also an M.C. graduate, was last year’s North American Hairstylist of the Year.  Both speakers gave students valuable insight into their own personal roads to success in the salon industry.

Following the conference, students and staff attended the North American Hairstyling Awards Gala.  The awards were especially exciting as M.C. College Winnipeg graduate Holly Hui was one of only five finalists in the Student Hairstylist of the Year category.  Although Hui did not receive the title, her work made all of the M.C. students and staff extremely proud.

The next day students spent time with two more of the industry’s biggest names, Aveda Global Master Ginger Boyle and legendary photographer Babak.  In addition to being a Global Master for Aveda, Boyle is also the owner of the prestigious Beverly Hills salon, Planet Salon.  She shared her experiences of successful salon ownership and working in a fast-paced world of entertainment and editorial styling.

Following Ginger, Babak spent over an hour with the students, reviewing his winning NAHA images and giving priceless feedback about what goes into creating a successful NAHA entry.  At the award ceremony the previous night, five of the winning stylists used Babak as their photographer of choice.

The objective of the trip is to create an exciting impression of the industry for new students.  M.C. College Group believes in training their students to succeed.  The best way to teach success is by observing successful people.  What better exposure can there be than meeting with and listening to industry icons!  For more information about this exciting career, go to www.mccollege.ca.
